David Hockney
One of the world's greatest modern artists, David Hockney was born in Bradford and educated at Bradford Grammar School, Bradford College of Art (which is now part of Bradford College) and the Royal College of Art in London.
During the 1960s and 1970s Hockney became internationally famous for iconic works such as "A Bigger Splash" and "Mr and Mrs Clarke and Percy" (an acrylic painting of the fashion and textile designers Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell and their cat - actually called Blanche, not Percy).
Despite moving to California David Hockney kept close ties with the city, with selected works being displayed in the 1853 Gallery in Saltaire (an arts venue which had been created by his old school friend, the late Jonathan Silver).
In later years Hockney returned to his native Yorkshire where he painted various landscapes in the Yorkshire Wolds near his sister's home in Bridlington.
