The Halifax Gibbet

Reconstruction of the Halifax Gibbet

The Halifax Gibbet was a decapitating machine or "engine" which was used to behead convicted felons in the West Yorkshire town of Halifax, predating the similar "guillotine" as used in the French revolution.

A replica of this gruesome device is situated at its original location near Gibbet Street, while the blade from the original machine can be seen in a local museum.
