Oakwell Hall, near Batley in the West Yorkshire district of Kirklees was visited by Charlotte Brontė in the 1830s. The house served as inspiration for "Fieldhead" in her novel Shirley.
[N.B. Nearby is Red House - which provided the inspiration for "Briarmains" in the same novel.]
Today the hall is a museum, situated in a pleasant country park.
