British Science Festival to be held in Bradford in 2011
The British Science Festival, Europe’s largest and most high profile public science event recently held a breakfast launch in Bradford to raise awareness that the Festival is coming to the city in September 2011. The event was attended by a range of people and potential partners from around the region.
The main aim of the breakfast launch event was to inspire and encourage the people, organisations, institutions and businesses of Bradford to support the Festival and to hold events as part of the Festival programme. The British Science Festival in Bradford will reflect the interests of the local community with the direct input of the people of Bradford.
The Festival typically brings in hundreds of the UK’s top scientists, engineers and commentators together to discuss the latest developments in science and technology with the public. Tens of thousands of visitors regularly attend a wide variety of events – from "hands-on" family days to debates on current hot topics and unique opportunities to question the UK’s top scientists.
Roland Jackson, Chief Executive of the British Science Association, said: "We are thrilled to be returning, on our third visit since 1831, to Bradford; a diverse city with thriving cultural and educational institutions. In order to put on the best possible show for the city, we need the whole community to get behind the Festival and come up with a programme of events to engage the wider audience and stimulate discussion around the vast array of latest developments, topics and issues raised at the Festival each year."
Trevor Higgins, Regional Director of BT said; "This is a great opportunity for the region to showcase its excellent capabilities in science and technology".
Almost every year since 1831, when the British Science Association was founded as the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the Festival (previously known as the Annual Meeting) has taken place at a different location around the country. During that time, Bradford has hosted the Festival twice – in 1873 and 1900.
The 2011 British Science Festival is organised by the British Science Association in partnership with the University of Bradford and is supported by the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council, Bradford College, Yorkshire Forward and Space Connections Enterprises, with financial support from the European Regional Development Fund.
