National Churches Trust awards a £20,000 grant to Haworth Parish Church
Essential repairs to the south roofs and tower at Haworth Parish Church have been secured following a £20,000 grant from the National Churches Trust.
The church, which is the site of the Brontė familys tomb, has been at the heart of the community since medieval times and is temporarily closed for services on Sunday, July 8th 2012 to allow work to start.
on repairing the south-facing roofs and tower to commence even though the fund-raising programme had not been completed.
The condition of the church roof had seriously deteriorated during the last few years. Two years ago the church launched an appeal fund and drew up a five-year, three-stage plan to repair the roof and make the building fit for worship in the 21st Century.
Haworth Parish Church needed to raise £227,000 to ensure that the first stage of the five-year plan, the repair to the time-expired south roofs and the tower, was able to go ahead and the £20,000 grant from the National Churches Trust has ensured that the church was finally able to meet that bill after a significant fund-raising campaign.
The Rev. Peter Mayo-Smith, Rector of Haworth Parish Church, said: "We are grateful to the National Churches Trust for their generosity. This important grant will ensure that the first part of our five-year plan to restore the building can be completed."
Besides playing a central role in our community here in Haworth, the church is also an important part of the tourist offering within the village because of the Brontė legacy so it is vital that the building is made waterproof once again.
