Jane Eyre

Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre"- which was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym "Currer Bell" - is a classic of English literature.

Conceived sometime around 1845, the novel was inspired by Charlotte's visits to Hathersage in the Derbyshire Peak District with her friend Ellen Nussey (whose brother was vicar at Hathersage Church, with proofs being edited while she was later visited Ellen at her own home "Brookroyd" in Kirklees.

The name "Eyre" is common in the Hathersage area, and not only did Charlotte use it for the surname of the central character, but she also drew on other names and places in the vicinity for the book.
