"Public Spaces Forgotten Places" - photography exhibition opens in Keighley

Yorkshire photographers are taking a fresh look at the county’s public spaces and forgotten places at Central Hall in Keighley.

Guiseley-based Steve Rayner concentrates on getting to know an area really well before capturing it on film, when the light is just right. His work will be on display alongside images of neglected gardens and allotments by Sheffield’s Kath Williamson from Monday 5 September to Friday 14 October 2011.

"My method of working has been to familiarise myself with an environment over days, weeks, possibly even years" says Steve. "As the images are recorded, I’m visualising how they will interact with each other or combine to form an impression or feeling, rather than a literal representation. Sometimes they work out as composites, occasionally as individual images."

Kath focuses on small and often overlooked corners of the city where nature is asserting itself. Treading a fine line between painting and photograph, her images reflect the transience, fragility and beauty of these wild places.

The two contrasting photographers were selected by arts support initiative Artists in Business, which organises selling opportunities, events and exhibitions and coordinates work with schools and community projects.

"It is becoming increasingly difficult for today’s photographers to show innovation and originality in this digital age" says organiser Jo Whitehead. "However, Kath and Steve have both achieved this. They complement and contrast each other in their work, creating an exciting and thoughtful exhibition."
