Towneley Hall
Situated in Towneley Park just outside Burnley and now a museum, Towneley Hall was the ancestral home of the Towneley family.
One of the most famous members of the family was Richard Towneley, the English scientist who together with Henry Power first proved that atmospheric pressure falls off with atmosphere in a series of experiments which were conducted using a barometer on nearby Pendle Hill.
Richard Towneley was also a keen astronomer, and established an observatory at the house. This was visited by John Flamsteed, the country's first Astronomer Royal with whom Towneley was in regular correspondence.
Bronte Country is designed, maintained and promoted by Eagle Intermedia Publishing Ltd.
