The Bronte Society has recently announced two creative workshops which will be taking place at the beautiful historic house of Ponden Hall near Stanbury in the heart of West Yorkshire's Bronte Country.
Ponden Hall, which was built by the local land owning Heaton family, is rich with associations with the Brontës. The sisters read books from the library there, socialised with the family on occasion and even as children took shelter there from the great Crow Hill Bog Explosion of 1824 !
There has long thought to have been connections between the house and Emily’s famous novel Wuthering Heights: Is the house the model for the Lintons' home of Thrushcross Grange or even Wuthering Heights itself (the more popularly associated location being that of the nearby ruined farmstead of Top Withens) ? Could the tiny single paned window set in the East Gable have inspired the chilling scene of Cathy’s ghost begging to be let in ? [In Wuthering Heights the window is described as opening onto a box bed and there was a bed of that description until the 1930s, and a local joiner has faithfully recreated this to great dramatic effect..]
Whatever the truth of the literary connections the atmospheric Ponden Hall has been chosen as the venue for two autumn workshops suitable for the more experienced or beginner interested in writing or watercolour painting:
A Day of Watercolours at Ponden Hall with Imogen Collins Thomas - Saturday 4th October 2014
Following last year’s successful watercolour painting workshop inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s botanical illustrations, this workshop will encourage participants to make their own illustrations from nature. Participants will forage the gardens and hedgerows around the hall to find autumnal leaves berries, and branches to create watercolours with additional materials being provided. Ticket (including lunch and refreshments) GBP 50.00
A Day of Creative Writing at Ponden Hall with Anne Caldwell - Saturday 4th October 2014
Anne will take participants through a series of starting points for poetry and short fiction with an emphasis on using sensory details and natural settings to convey mood, character and atmosphere. Ticket (including lunch and refreshments) GBP 50.00
